Everton Football Club are an English football club, located in Liverpool, UK. Everton currently compete domestically in the English Premier League and traditionally play in a royal blue and white kit, with The Toffees as their nickname.
Everton were originally founded in 1878 making them one of the oldest English football teams. They were founded as St. Domingo's, after the church in the Everton area of Liverpool. The club was renamed Everton within a year, so people outside the parish could play for the team.
In 1888, Everton became founding members of The Football League. From their foundation, the club has played games at Stanley Park, Liverpool. The club began playing at Anfield, before they moved across Stanley Park to play at Goodison Park, where they still play their home games. Since the foundation of The Football League, Everton hold the record for the most number of seasons in the top-tier, only spending four seasons out of it since 1888.
Everton had their most successful period prior to World War 2, winning five league titles since the foundation of the The Football League. They won their first league title in 1890 and their first FA Cup win in 1906. The post-war era for Everton was not as successful, but managed a number of successes in both the 1960s and 1980s domestically, with both league and cup honours. In 1985 they won the European Cup Winners' Cup, which was their first European success.
Everton's biggest rivals are Liverpool and games between them are known as the Merseyside derby. It is one of the biggest derby games in English football. The derby between Liverpool and Everton has taken place on a regular basis, since both clubs have spent most of their history in the top tier of English football.
Domestically Everton have won the English league title on nine occasions in their history and also 5 FA Cups. The club however has never won the Football League Cup despite their long history of success. Their only European title came in 1985, when they won the Cup Winners' Cup.
