Burnley Football Club, formerly known as Burnley Rovers F.C., was established in 1882 and is located in Burnley, Lancashire, UK. Burnley Rovers began as a Rugby Union team, before changing sports to football in 1882. They went on to become one of the founding members of the English Football League in 1888. At the time they played in blue and white kits and later changed their kit colours to claret and blue in 1910. The reason for the colour change was due to the success of Aston Villa, who at the time were seen as England's biggest club and also played in claret. Burnley currently compete domestically in the English Premier League.

Burnley's home ground is Turf Moor, where they have played since 1883. In the year before they moved toTurf Moor, Burnley played at Calder Vale. Turf Moor as a sports stadium originally broke ground in 1833, but as a cricket ground. It was also the first football ground in England to be visited by a member of The Royal Family.

The Lancashire club has won the English league title on two occasions and are one of only three teams to win all four professional divisions in the English league pyramid, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Preston North End.

Due to Burnley's geographical location in England, they have a number of local rivalries. Their main rivalry is often considered to be either Preston North End or Blackburn Rovers, depending on the era of history being discussed. The club also has other rivalries with Blackpool, Stockport County and Rochdale.

Domestically, Burnley were in the top flight of English football for the majority of their history, until the mid-1970s when they were relegated. Since then they have only returned on a couple of occasions. Their first major honour was winning the FA Cup in 1914, which is the only time they have held the title. They won the English league title in 1920-21 and also 1959-60.

In European competition, Burnley have reached the quarter finals of two European competitions, the European Cup and also the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, both in the 1960s.
